Cardigan Welsh Corgi History The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a herding breed, descended from the Teckel family of dogs of whom Dachshunds are also members. The breed is believed to have been in existence in Wales for over 3,000 years. The Cardigan's job was to work in front of his master's cattle herd and clear the way by chasing off potential predators. Later, the Cardigan began to act as a herder, working behind the master's cattle and as a "drover", driving cattle from the Welsh farms to the English markets. It is thought that the Cardigan was cross bred with local sheep dogs in order to obtain a more versatile herding dog. The Cardigan was bred long and low so as to avoid the kicks of agitated cattle. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was officially recognized as a breed by the AKC in 1935 Cardigan Welsh Corgi Temperament Cardigans are spirited, energetic and atheletic dogs that make good family pets.
