Canaan Dog History The Canaan Dog is an ancient breed that originates from Israel and belongs to the Spitz family.This dog is one of the oldest breeds, dating back to biblical times. Developed from the breeding of feral dogs in the Middle East, these dogs were used to protect livestock as well as being used as messengers by the Israeli Army. The Canaan Dog was officially recognized as a breed by the AKC in 1997. Canaan Dog Temperament Canaan Dogs have a strong survival instinct. They are quick to react and wary of strangers, and will alert its masters to any disturbances with prompt barking, thus making them excellent watchdogs. Although defensive to strangers they make very loyal family pets and are good with children. These dogs are very independent by nature and can be difficult to train since they tend to get bored with repetetive obedience drills. They are energetic and agile and love to run. Canaan Dog Appearance Canaan dogs are medium sized dog that usually weighs between 35 to 60 pounds and stand 18 to 24 inches at the withers. Their appearance is similar to a German Shepherd Dog, except that they have a bushy, curly tail carried over the back. Their coat is of medium length and the colours vary from white or black, harlequin, and sandy, cream, reddish brown, and black. Cannan Dog Grooming Canaan dogs are heavy seasonal shedders and need a weekly brushing to keep looking neat and clean. Canaan Dog Life Expectancy and Health Problems This breed is considered on of the healthiest breeds of dogs. Although seldom seen, some diseases that can affect this dog are Hypothyroidism, Epilepsy, Cataracts and Hip Dysplaysia. The average lifespan of these dogs is 12 to 15 years.
