Brittany History

The breed originated in an area of France called Callac. In the 1800's it wascommon for the landed gentry in England to shoot partridge and snipe in France, and, of course, they took with them their best gundogs, mostly setters and pointers. These English dogs were often left with the French landowners from one season to the next, and resulted in a number of matings between the popular Fougeres, a very highspirited spaniel from the area, and these English Pointers and English and Gordon Setters. It was such a popular combination of dog that by the 1900's, the animals produced from planned matings had become more or less typified into the Brittany that you see today. The Brittany was officially recognized as breed by the AKC in 1934

Brittany Temperament

Brittanys are cheerful, happy dogs that love to work and play. They are sweet tempered and make good family pets, since they get along very well with children. They are loyal to their families and make excellent companions in the home and in the field. Since they are a hunting dog, they are easily trained, but are energetic and have high exercise requirements. They get along well with other animals, but they can be timid or shy around strangers, so socialization must start at an early age.
