Beauceron History The Beauceron is a herding dog from the plains region, between the Seine and Loir rivers, surrounding Paris, France, known as La Beauce. The name, however, is misleading since the dog was found all over the country of France. It is also a well known fact that the Beauceron contributed to the development of the Doberman dog breed. The breed was very active in both World Wars as messenger dog, supply transport dog, and helped with detecting land mines and rescing wounded soldiers. Beacueron Temperament The Beauceron is intelligent, friendly, very calm, protective of children, and fearless. They are perfect for both inside and outside the house and can be trained for a variety of activities. Due to their herding heritage, they are energetic dogs. It was known all around France as a protection dog and these dogs excel in a dog sport called Ring Sport. Beauceron Appearance This breed usually weighs between 70 to 85 pounds and stands 24 to 28 inches at the withers. They are a large, muscular dog that looks much like a German Shepherd with Doberman markings. They have smooth short coats that are easy to maintain. One of the breed characteristics is a set of double dew claws on the back of the front legs. The colours are black and tan as well as black, tan and grey (otherwise know as harlequin) Beauceron Grooming These dogs have few grooming requirements, a light brushing once a week will suffice. They are medium shedders. Beauceron Life Expectancy and Health Problems Beaucerons are a robust breed and have few health problems. The most common ones are Hip Displaysia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy and Bloat. The typical lifespan of this breed is 10 to 12 years.
