That’s Damn Interesting! Lovely Links 01-24-2013

Carnation and Nestlé want to market a birth control dog food for female dogs. What you don’t know is that the “secret ingredient”
Mibolerone, is a very powerful anabolic steroid available only thru the vet by prescription. Mibolerone has been shown to cause serious liver injury in humans and can cause liver & kidney damage to dogs. Bedlington Terrier owners are advised NOT to feed this proposed food to their dogs. *NOTE* Turns out this article is from 1985. This is what happens when I do my reading way too late at night. Interesting reading, nonetheless. Geez, I was 13 years old when this article was written…

Dr. Andrea Horowitz, author of Inside A Dog, want to see you & your dog playing. You need to record a 30 to 60 second video of you & your dog having a play session and then upload it to her website. It’s fun and you’ll be participating in the scientific process to understand dog behavior. See all the details here and tip of the hat to Mary for sharing!

Dogs can digest starches and wolves cannot which proves that dogs and humans co-evolved together. Wolves have two copies of the gene that produces amylase in the pancreas while dogs have four to 30.

Cats bites can cause serious problems. Their teeth can cause tiny, yet deep puncture wounds that can get dangerously infected. It cost this guy $55K in medical bills to save his hand.

One of my friends had to be rushed to the emergency room since she noticed that her skin on her hand was rapidly turning red and the redness was creeping towards her arm. She got bitten on the finger while trying to trim her cats nails. Yep, good times…

Wow! Great list! I am still cringing at the birth control dog food and the hamburger in Ireland. Seriously? WTH??? Yuck!

Nestle seems to becoming a monster of a pet food company, and by that mean a big house of horrors. I don’t trust them at all. Ugh!

Very interesting piece on dogs and wolves.

Thanks for the two mentioned Karen. Have a great day!

  3. What is it with contaminating our (and our dog’s) food? Horse meat in beef and dangerous steroids masquerading at birth control – things have gotten way out of hand.

I loved that post about the woman who worked in the puppy mill, too. And thanks for linking to our contest – I can’t wait to see where Jersey and Dexter pose!

Cat bites are definitely a health concern. My husband was actually attacked a few months ago when volunteering for the local SPCA. I made sure he went to the doctor immediately for antibiotics as you can’t be too careful. In some ways, it’s far worse to be bitten by a cat than a dog as their teeth can get much deeper.

Thanks for the Horowitz link! I am sure I have some great footage to send her!

I never knew how serious cat bites were until a personality from the Howard Stern Show was hospitalized and needed surgery for a cat bite on her finger.

The NY Times article about dog food with a contraceptive chemical is dated 1985.

According to a respected dog breeder and judge who worked on this project in the 1980s, the concept was abandoned many years ago for various ethical and medical reasons. If he grants permission to crosspost his comments on it I will post them here.

“In the early 1970′s I and some others in California contacted an industry group and a pet food manufacturer to develop a canned food that would result in sterilization. We were working with several truly humane groups. The food was developed to the state where the company was going to apply to FDA for approval. It was not a one dose solution, multiple meals needed to be consumed. Concurrently those of us involved had a meeting on some studies that were conducted at various Universities – we were concerned about ethical and moral issues. One study showed that a fair percentage of canned pet food was being consumed by people – mainly the homeless. Our intention was to reduce the stray dog population. We discussed the misuse of the product by extremists in the humane community. The legal aspects of a human consuming the product and becoming sterile or sick was possibly the tipping point for the manufacturer. All associated with this program agreed to end all efforts – the potential of misuse was too high and ethically it was not a course of action any of us wanted to take. The only good that came out of this effort was some of the humane people changed their minds about purebred dog breeders. We were able to work together on some areas, and agree to disagree in others. But by the 80′s the radical element in the Humane movement pushed out those that truly cared about the animals.
“The 600 Million Stray Dog Organization is raising funds world wide for “The Treat.” We need to become proactive with legislation forbidding the use of any single dose food type sterilization product by anyone except a Vet. It needs to be called a controlled substance.”

  9. Thanks for the H/T and mention Karen! That is one cool study Horowitz is doing =)

Looks like I have some reading cut out for me – and that Nestle thing…wow. I heard about the horrific horse meat scandal…I expect the same to happen here now that those idiots are back in “business”. I had read and appreciated that study on dogs and wolves and how they started differentiating and evolving.

Good stuff, as usual Karen =)
