PetSmart Charities Offer $20 Pit Bull Spays & Neuters For Month of August

Let’s start off the month of August with a bang! In January 2012, PetSmart  Charities®, announced a $1 million national spay/neuter grant program aimed at saving the lives of pets that have the highest risk of being euthanized due to overcrowding in shelters: cats and pit bull terriers. The low-cost spay/neuter program for cats was in February, now the pit bulls get their turn.

Did you know that pit bull and pit bull type dogs make up approximately 30% of the animal population in US animal shelters? Did you know that for every 100 surrendered pit bull and pit bull type dogs, only 7 will find permanent homes? What is even more disturbing is that since 2006, ONE MILLION pit bull and pit bull type dogs are euthanized YEARLY in the US. I think that if I knew the worldwide numbers, I would curl up in the fetal position and start weeping.

During the month of August, PetSmart is hosting the “Primp Your Pit” program. The charity will be granting funds to 65 spay/neuter clinics across the US so that they can offer $20 spay or neuter surgeries exclusively to pit bulls. To find a clinic that is participating in the program, click here. No clinic in your area? There are plenty of free and low-cost pit bull spay/neuter clinics in the US  which you can find here.

So if you are a pit bull owner, take advantage of the program. Stopping the flood of new dogs coming into the shelters will give the dogs already there a better chance of finding a home.

While pit bulls are the spay & neuter “stars” this month, the spay/neuter message applies to ALL domestic pets. Like Bob Barker said at the end of every Price Is Right Show – Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.

  1. This is great news! What a deal for the pit bull owners. I hope people take advantage of this – so many pits are killed in shelters every year. And, as we know, the best way to prevent that is to spay and neuter.

I know! What can $20 get you these days? Dinner for 2 at a fast food restaurant. It’s a great deal for a great cause!
