How To Make A Slip Lead With Paracord

A slip lead is a handy collar and leash in one. Slip leads are especially popular in kennels and vet’s offices since there is no need to have a collar on the dog. This tutorial will show you how to make a slip lead using the four strand round braid technique. I will be making the stopper with a turk’s head knot.

Tools & Supplies

Since I am making a 5 foot leash, I will need 2 strands of paracord that are EACH 264 inches long. To make the turk’s head knot I will need a separate piece of paracord that is ten inches long. An O-ring is the only piece of hardware that is needed. Other tools needed are a wood burning tool, a hemostat clamp, a pair of scissors, a C-clamp & a marking pen.

Making The Leash

Since I have already posted a four strand round braid tutorial, please visit it if you need help braiding the leash.

When you get to your desired leash length, take your hemostat and secure the end of the braid. There are a few things that we have to do before we make the handle.

Making The Turk’s Head Knot

*NOTE* After I made the knot on the marking pen, I found that is was a little too large for the leash. I used a small Sharpie marking pen which turned out to be the perfect size.

STEP 1 – Find the center of the paracord with the pen.

STEP 2 – Complete the round turn.

STEP 3 – Wrap the right hand end so that it lies underneath the left hand end.

STEP 4 – Continue with the right hand strand and cross over the first wrap.

STEP 5 – Now tuck the strand underneath the left hand strand.

STEP 6 – Lay the left hand strand over the┬ásecond wrap and tuck under the first wrap.

STEP 7 – Turn the pen over so that you are looking at the back of the knot.

STEP 8 – Cross the top wrap over the bottom wrap

STEP 9 – Take the bottom strand and thread over the bottom wrap and under the top wrap.

STEP 10 – Take the top strand and thread it under the top wrap and have it pass over the bottom wrap. Now gently tighten the knot so that it looks even.

STEP 11 – Slide the knot off the pen and cut off the excess paracord.

STEP 12 – Melt the ends of the paracord with the wood burning tool.

So that it looks like this;

Finishing The Slip Lead

STEP 1 – Unclamp the end of the lead and slide it through the O-ring.

STEP 2 – Slide the turk’s head knot onto the lead.

STEP 3 – Finish the handle according the the instructions in the four strand round braid tutorial and you’re done!

I love this tutorial, but as I can’t even braid hair, I would never have the guts to attempt it. Thank god you do these things for the rest of us! :-)

  3. You have some great tutorials Karen! Time to put together an ebook of all your tutes?

  4. Karen, you should write a crafts book for dog owners.
