American Water Spaniel History

The American Water Spaniel originated around the mid-1800s but its true origin is a mystery. Most experts have come to accept that it was likely developed in the Fox River and Wolf River valleys of Wisconsin. It has been thought that breeds contributing to it's make-up today were the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the Irish Water Spaniel. It was used by hunters as a flushing dog, for upland game, and a retrieving dog for waterfowl in marshes. The American Water Spaniel was officially recognized as a breed by the AKC in 1940.
